Stampede!!!

July 4, 2008

Giddy-up all you cowboys and cowgirls, the Calgary Stampede has officially started!  Its time for ya’ll to put on your cowboy hat, cowboy boots, giant belt buckles and extra tight jeans, or extra short jean skirts!  The party started this mornin’ with the parade:

Horses, bands, more horses, big ones little ones, pretty ones and even prettier ones!  Note the painted faces and horses on the back two!  A beautiful princess:

The RCMP:

And followin’ after them all: The street cleaners for all the poo!

This parade is the second largest in the world after Macy’s and was a lot of fun.  If you would like to see a few more shots, check out my Flickr Page.

Happy July 4th to all our friends down south!  There were a few groups in the parade from the U S Of A, and we made sure we shouted out our good wishes for a Happy 4th! to them!  We cheered everyone; cops on bikes, Mounties, firemen, army, navy, pipe bands, high school bands, dance groups, all the past Queens, Princess of the Stampede, various rodeos.  The Native Canadians, Muslim Canadians, Danish Canadians, South Asian Canadians, Chinese Canadians.  Canada sure is a diverse place eh?

Where’s the picture of you in your cowgirl outfit? The slide show on flickr is awesome but did we really need the sock? Or were you trying to block out the soldiers/cadets?

I got to march in the parade three times. The rule with horse poo is if you can widen your stance to miss it, you do. If you can’t, you step hard to get the pants of the person next to you! I still laugh when I think about that, I guess I’m not growing up any time soon… Glad you got to go, I was thinking about the parade as I lounged in the pool yesterday, sounds great but it was 114 and muggy.

  5. Very cool! But what were YOU wearing?

The pooper scoopers at my hometown parade never looked like that. Sniff.
