Wednesday Work in Progress

February 29, 2012

Yeah, I finally got around to posting a WIP post. Go me!!

I spent the first month of the year knitting on deadlines, both of which I missed.   I made a stuffed toy, a week late, and a pair of mittens that I was a thumb shy on the night of the Silent Auction at which they were supposed to be auctioned off.  As a result I have vowed not to make anything on a deadline the rest of the year, and I went on a casting on frenzy.  First on the needles was a new sweater for Althea using Malabrigio Rios.

This will be a nice one for her to wear around the house, and outside once spring gets here.  Very simple top down raglan design.

I cast on for a Tree of Life sweater which has very dark yarn that doesn’t photograph well. This is going to be a big cosy sweater for cool winter nights, and most other nights here in Calgary.

I also started a Hawthorne shawl which is going to be nice and warm on cold spring days.  I know that winter won’t be over for a few more months, but it was nice and warm today, which is making me hopeful we won’t have any more deep freeze sessions.  We probably will though  won’t we?  A worsted weight shawl is always going to be cozy.  I’m also making Mr. J mittens!  I’d better finish one or two things before I start anything else.  I’m not buying any new yarn until a local sale in April, unless I need some to finish a project that is!

Friday’s R 4 Obsessions

February 24, 2012

I think I’ve been too busy this week to be obsessed with anything but making deadlines and responding to people that I said I would respond to.  Althea is going to sleep at 6 pm, so I’m firing up my laptop for another hour of work.  That still leaves me an hour to knit before I pass out wherever I am at the moment.  I prefer to already be in my own bed at the time.  AND in other big news I’ve been staying in my own bed until around 11:30 pm when the baby wakes up and I go in and sleep with her.  This is the way my mind works at 11:30 when I’ve just been woken up from a sound sleep;  I could nurse her back to sleep and stay wake, then get her back into her crib and go back to my own bed, which may take 1/2 hr to 45 minutes if I’m lucky.  Or I could lay down with her on the futon we have in her room, latch her on, and go right back to sleep.  We generally sleep until 4 or 5 am straight.  Sleep always wins.  This is progress however, as I’m getting those first few hours in my own bed, hereby known as the most comfortable bed in the world.  The futon, not so comfy, but I get to snuggle with a cute baby so that makes up for it.

Alright what could I call my current obsession?  What can’t I stop thinking about?  Ceramic membranes folks.  Yes that is correct, not very interesting is it.  I can’t really link to anything in particular as it is all very proprietary at the moment.  I’ll just leave it at me doing a lot of research on ceramic membranes and people asking me things like “how much would that cost +/- a million dollars?”.  At at least I’ll be doing a lot of research this weekend.

Oh, I’m also looking around for new glasses on the internets as a certain baby is very quick and always grabs mine off my face, and then is busy eating/twisting/pulling them.  Ta everyone!

Friday’s R For Obsessions

February 17, 2012

This week I’m obsessed with the Fall 2012 Ralph Lauren Collection.  Take a second to check it out.  Then go and plan your fair isle vest, tweedy trousers, and I must have a gold coloured sweater.

Althea ended up having 3 birthday parties; one on the day of with just Mummy and Daddy, one the week later with friends, and one this past weekend with our baby group.  One year on and all the babies in our group are doing so well, and are super cute and fun to be around.  We hadn’t seen our baby group in a little while, well because we’re all so busy!  Babies starting day care, Mummies going back to work, Daddies working.  It was so much fun to see everyone, I just want to continuously hug all their cute babies.

Althea did end up getting some presents from her Dad and I.  The good thing about her birthday is that presents that aren’t finished for Christmas become birthday presents!  She got a day dress:

And I finished up her monkey:

The monkey just needed a face, a hat and scarf.  You know, ’cause it is winter and it is cold out there.

With the start of daycare, we are well into cold/flu/plague season.  Althea and I are just barely getting over the last one that saw us laid flat for a week almost.  We still have a cough that isn’t going away, but at least she is sleeping better, which means I’m sleeping better, which is very good.  The great thing about day care – literally only a matter of days until she, and then me get sick.  This is where I laugh hysterically, and then go upstairs from where I’m writing this post to have a drink.  And maybe a bit of a weep.  Hopefully talk to you tomorrow!
